It appears that the days of the PlayStation 4 are coming to an end.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has since its launch in 2013 become their second biggest seller with 117 million units sold. It is also the fourth best-selling console of all time, behind the Nintendo DS and Game Boy. It has been a defining part of its generation, providing some unforgettable video games. It seems like Sony are considering ending the console’s life soon.

A recently released trailer on PlayStations YouTube gave us a preview of some of the games that will be available in 2023 for the PS4 and PS5 consoles. Games such as Final Fantasy 16, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores Expansion, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Forspoken, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and Dead Space appear in it and are much-awaited titles. However, in addition to enthusiasm, there is something else shared by these titles: they will be exclusive to the PS5.

Currently, there are just five initial PS5 exclusives two years after Sony’s new gaming console dropped. There aren’t many exclusive third-party games since many of them can also be found on the PS4. However, this new trailer highlights plenty of titles that will be PS5-only, including Alan Wake 2, Dead Space, and so on.

At the conclusion of 2020, Microsoft ceased making the Xbox One in order to prioritize the Series X|S. Despite the PS5 supply crisis, Sony requested a further one million PS4s for 2022 which could explain the dramatic increase in demand for them, since the system had already been out for nine years.

In 2023, the PS4 will have existed for ten years and its looming retirement is seeming more and more likely. With the depleting games from both first- and third-party developers combined with the launch of PSVR 2 which requires a PS5 to access the new virtual reality, this could very well be the last year for the PS4. Should Sony pull the plug on the PS4, it will mark the end of an era.
