Velma is solving mysteries in the new show preview from HBO Max.

The release of a trailer for Velma which made its debut tomorrow has got people talking as it depicts a divergent take on the Scooby-Doo idea. The trailer includes allusions to the show and demonstrates that this variation of the cartoons will be funnier and geared towards an adult audience.

Velma is ready to deviate from its source material. Scooby-Doo has no part in it since Mindy Kaling couldn’t fit such a child-oriented character in the show. Furthermore, Warner Bros. Animation prohibited the use of the character presumably because the show is aimed at grown-ups.

A trailer that only adults can watch was posted to the HBO Max YouTube page. Velma (Kaling) narrates the clip, claiming that it is her unique account of what transpired in the formation of the greatest ever supernatural crime-solving squad. Following this, the trailer introduces different versions of the Mystery Inc. gang and they are notably changed.

To start off is Shaggy (Sam Richardson); this variation of the character assists Velma in her investigations. He’s her number one ally and he has a fondness for her. Also, he has a dislike of illegal substances, which is inconsistent with how he is portrayed in other Scooby-Doo cartoons. This incarnation of Shaggy is known as Norville (Shaggy being a nickname, like in other adaptations), and he seems to have more of a journalist-like disposition than that of a fearful one.

Fred is introduced as an arrogant and selfish individual who doesn’t value Velma because she is not attractive. This version of Daphne is mean, once being friends with Velma, but left her to be popular. There are clues that both of them are interested in one another, and it is implied that Velma is a lesbian, a detail that later became relevant in an animated direct-to-video film. Velma jokingly states that she cannot confirm somebody’s sexuality, other than Peppermint Patty, who is thought of as a symbol of the LGBT community.

The trailer shows that the murder that is being investigated has something to do with the supernatural. A few notorious villains from Scooby-Doo make an appearance including the Ghost of Captain Cutler, but it is not clear how they fit into the main case. By the end of the trailer, Mystery Inc. seems to be all together, so even though they look different, they will still be on the job.
